Entering from Mainland China vs. Nepal

Your entry point determines exactly what paperwork you need:

  • Visiting Tibet from China: If you are planning an overland journey or flying in from mainland China, you will need a standard Chinese Visa alongside your approved Tibet Travel Permit documentation.
  • The “Tibet Visa from China” Misconception: Many travelers mistakenly look for a specific Tibet visa from China; however, Tibet is an autonomous region, not a separate country. You simply need a regular Chinese tourist visa, and we provide the accompanying regional entry permit.

Visa-Free Entry to China for Tibet Travel

Great news for international travelers! To simplify cross-border travel, ordinary passport holders from the listed countries can enter mainland China without a visa (for tourism, business, or transit purposes). From there, all you need is to obtain an official Tibet Travel Permit to enter the Tibet Autonomous Region!

The visa waiver only replaces your standard Chinese Visa, but it doesn’t bypass the regional Tibet travel requirement. Our team will simply use your visa-free passport entry credentials to secure your regional permits.

If your passport is from one of the eligible countries, you can enter mainland China visa-free:

Additional Military and Regional Permits

If your custom itinerary takes you beyond the capital city of Lhasa, a standard entry permit isn’t quite enough. Depending on your destination, you may need additional security clearances:

Aliens' Travel Permit

This document is mandatory if you plan to visit restricted, iconic areas outside Lhasa, such as Shigatse, or the Mount Everest Base Camp region. Unlike the main entry permit, this is issued by the Public Security Bureau (PSB) once you arrive in Tibet. Your tour guide will take your original passports to the local PSB office in Shigatse to process this on the road, which usually takes less than an hour.

Tibet Military Permit

For deep overland journeys or spiritual pilgrimages to highly sensitive border regions, like Mount Kailash (Ngari Prefecture) or eastern Nyingchi, a specialized Tibet Military Permit is strictly required. Issued by the Military Affairs Office, this document requires extra security vetting. Because it takes up to several weeks to clear, we require you to book your trip and submit your documents at least 30 days in advance.
